A Letter to Athena

Athena. Pallas Athena. That’s what they call you now, isn’t it? You took her name and now your whole self is a manifestation of your grief. You carved yourself into the image of her. It doesn’t bring her back.

This statue you hailed protection. It would protect like you couldn’t.

When Cassandra put her faith in you - In her - and was torn away from the refuge you promised you sent the wind and the rain and the hail to destroy and scatter an entire fleet in her name.

Her name. Your name.

Athena, of Wisdom and warfare. Of law and justice. Some may think that is why you did it, why you committed your whole godly lifespan to a childhood friend. But, is her death really justified - even now?

Every war you win, every city you honour and every hero you patron is in her name. In her respect.

Will it ever be enough? No, You still grieve but Athena you were only a child. A child raised in war. A girl raised to impress.

You are so much more.

Power personified.

If I should have a daughter, when she asks me how to fight the monsters in the dark and the devils in the daylight I will show her where you, Athena, are.

I will tell her, right there, right here, love.

In you.
